Fishing

We offer striper (Rockfish) and crappie fishing trips because they are two of Gary’s favorite species. Striper and crappie have a lot of similarities and differences. We take our clients to some of the most beautiful lakes and rivers in North Carolina and southern Virginia. We fish from a 2003 twenty foot War Eagle boat powered by a Mercury jet drive outboard. We want our clients to enjoy their entire fishing experience.

We offer striper fishing at Smith Mountain, Buggs Island (Kerr Lake) and the two rivers that feed the lake (Staunton and the Dan Rivers) and Jordan Lake. Most of the year we will take our clients to lake but during the spawn, we will take our clients to the Staunton and Dan River. The spring spawn usually takes place in April and early May. We fish for stripers with fresh caught gizzard, threadfin shad and alewives. Occasionally we will cast buck tails and top water lures.

We also offer striper fishing on the Roanoke River. We fish the Weldon section of the River. We offer these trips during the open and closed season. The majority of the time, we catch bigger fish during the closed season when you are not allowed to keep them. All Roanoke River trips are exciting because we troll with live shad caught from the river and we will also fish with buck tails. Combine that with the fact there are lots of fish in the river spawning at this time. This is a great opportunity for the fly fisherman to test their skills as well. The weather or changing river conditions can have large impact on our success but we normally do catch fish on these trips. If you have never fished the Roanoke River we would encourage you to book a trip this spring.

The best time to book a crappie fishing trip is when most people like to stay at home. We offer crappie fishing trips at Buggs Island and Jordan Lake during the months of January, February and early March. Clients will have the opportunity to catch the biggest crappie during these times, as opposed to to the trips during the remainder of the year. We will continue to fish for crappie throughout the year but we see our best results during the colder months. We fish with live shad 2-3 inches in length taken from the lake or small minnows. We have also seen success with small crappie jigs. During the summer months we move to night fishing. The size of the fish during night fishing trips are generally not as big, however there is usually many fish caught. If you have never fished for crappie in January or February or at night during the summer call us to learn some new tricks for these tasty fish.

We provide all the gear that the client will need as well as bait. The client will need to bring a lunch, snacks, drinks, and a cooler to take your fish home. The client will also need to provide your North Carolina fishing license, proper clothing including rain gear and sun screen. We strongly recommend a good pair of sun glasses.
